About David Fine - Freelance Writer

I graduated in 1994 from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor's Degree in French. In 1995 I moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where eventually I obtained an intership at the left-leaning economics publication Dollars and Sense magazine, and then later obtained another internship at The American Prospect magazine, where I authored the article "Grassroots Medicine" about medical marijuana and the then-ballot initiatives that recently legalized it, and its status as a prohibited Schedule 1 drug. After that internship, I worked for a time solely as a freelance writer, writing for The Nation, Mother Jones, and Salon. Then I became manager of the now-defunct Electronic Policy Network (owned by The American Prospect), a web-network of policy organizations and think tanks. After that I abandoned journalism and moved into website design and management for a few companies. In 2002 I left the Boston area and moved back to my hometown of Toledo, Ohio. Back in Toledo I began as a self-employed web designer and started writing freelance for the Toledo City Paper, Toledo's free monthly paper. I've written for the Toledo City Paper on and off for about 20 years. Then in 2020 I wrote a couple OpEds for the Toledo Blade newspaper, and then most recently wrote another OpEd, advocating for the health insurance program Medicare for All, for the Toledo Blade.

I have been very influenced by notable progressive activists Senator Bernie Sanders, and recently read his pamphlet "Fight Oligarchy!" and Former Secretary of Labor and professor Robert Reich, and read his recent memoir "Coming Up Short". I strongly support their prescriptions for improving American democracy, equality, wealth inequality, and the economic situation in this country. I also volunteered on Bernie's presidential primary campaign in 2016.

Now I am interested in broadening my freelance writing and trying to publish in national magazines on public policy issues, campaign finance reform, wealth inequality and the need for a wealth tax, health care and health insurance, raising the federal minimum wage, climate change and protecting the environment, and other important issues of the day.
